                       The Early Middle Ages:
               Charlemagne Revived the Idea of Empire

Outcomes: The students will be able to:
    Understand how the Merovingian process of succession
    weakened the kingdom.
    Explain how the Frankish kings and the Pope became
    allied.
    Know where Charlemagne fought his greatest wars and
    against who.
    Define the role of a count.
    List two ways in which Charlemagne strengthened his
    rule.
    Discuss what the title ":emperor" means.
                Discuss how Charlemagne promoted learning.

Activity:
        The students will write a brief paper discussing what they consider
to be Charlemagne's greatest achievement and why.  What makes him
such an appealing historical figure?
