Lesson Name: Who Needs Geography?
Subject: Geography, Grade: 10 Time: 50 minutes
Materials: Internet in room/print materials in room, marker
board/markers, syllabus.
Lesson Summary: As 10th graders, students are starting
to think about what they want to “be when they grow up”. This lesson
will explore the idea that ALL professions relate to geography in some
way or another. By starting the year off with this lesson, students
will be able to relate their future to what they are doing right now and
see a purpose for the things that we will study.
Instructional Objectives:
The students will be able to...

1. Brainstorm occupations that they are interested in and what kind of
college degree they will need to have in order to work in the field.

2. Identify and describe different aspects of their chosen occupation that
might have to do with geography.

3. Apply the knowledge that they have received to their everyday life and
realize that there are many relationships that geography has to the “real
world”.
Key Point: All disciplines can relate to geography.
Whether it is math, science, history, language arts, or physical education,
the study of geography can help a student tie what they are learning in
other classes to what they are learning in geography and tie them to the
“real world”.
Procedure:

1. The teacher will introduce the subject of geography. 3 minutes

2. The teacher will allow the students 4 minutes to write down several
occupations that they are interested in. A list will be compiled
on the board.

3. From this list the teacher will begin to ask questions about the jobs
and what types of duties each profession entails. 5 minutes

4. The students will be asked to research one geography related profession
of the teacher's choice either on the internet or print material provided
by the teacher. Ten minutes will be given for research.
Assessment:
-
1. The student will give a 2-minute oral presentation about the occupation
he/she researched, listing the main duties of the profession and the schooling
required for the occupation – one main point should be written on the board.
6 students/ 12 minutes

2. A discussion will be held after all the presentations are complete with
students asking each other or the teacher questions about what they found.
4-5 minutes
Closure:
In an effort to introduce geography as a worthy field of study, the
teacher will reinforce her argument by handing out the syllabus for the
following semester and reviewing all the regions that will be studied.
The occupations that have been discussed could be tied in to the material
here. 8-10 minutes
