HIST/REL 492/592 Christian Apologetics M-F 10:00-11:50 July Summer Session Instructor: Art Marmorstein |
While
religions sometimes spread at the point of a sword or through
government coercion, believers often take a far different route, making
their appeal to human reason. Christianity in particular spread
in part because of the work of its "apologists," men and women who
attempted to show that there were rational grounds for Christian faith.
This
course will discuss the development of Christian apologetics from the
first century through the present. It will focus on the way in
which Christian thinkers responded to challenges ranging from the
persecutions of the early centuries to the rise of rationalism during
the Enlightenment to the rise of materialism during the 20th century.
Students
considering Northern's new Religious Studies minor are especially
encouraged to sign up for HIST/REL 492. The course can also be used as
an upper-division history elective. Transcripts of all lectures are online to
accommodate students who need to miss occasional classes due to
work/travel conflicts.
